Set Design research and ideas

DOS PUEBLOS
Set Ideas
2/22/08

The few days I spent in Portland observing Dos Pueblos rehearsals was amazing. Thanks for welcoming me into your process. I am going to attempt to recap our ideas that developed over those few days, and to include a sampling of the research images we looked at together.

FABRICATED ENVIROMENTS
Inspired by the indoor Dubai ski slope and the Japanese electric beaches, we are interested in creating an environment that is similar to these man-made fabricated environments. These environments are theatrically created to house very specific events. Skiing and laying on a beach are the most obvious, but along with those activities certain ‘props’ and actions apply. There would be a check-out counter where you get your gear, a concessions stand, lighting requirements, saftety requirements, etc.
By creating our own fabricated environment, we create a program that happens within it that we can theatricalize. For example, the need for checking in and out props could be handled much like checking out gear at a counter. Money could be exchanged, or tickets/coupons. Lockers might be involved to allow for costume changes, etc.
Our basic environment might be a DESERT. This would act as a blank slate for creating a beach, a barren desert, a mission town, a border town, etc.

USE OF A MODEL& CHANGING SCALE & PROJECTIONS
Discussions of a small scale representation of our full scale set on stage together - the full scale set would remain the basic or generic environment, while the small model could be changed
Projections will be used across the full scale set
A video camera could be mounted to a track over the model of the set. Using a small scale set allows us to make set changes efficiently and dynamicly, projecting the image of the model across the full scale set. Using these projections, we can not only make changes to our environment, but can stage small scale explosions or events that appear to happen in full scale.

DOS PUEBLOS SET WITHIN CHANGING THEATRE ENVIRONMENTS
Our set should be able to be set into any theatre or performance space so it focuses the audience to our world, but no masking is necessary

TRAVEL/TOURING NEEDS
The model of the set would be able to pack up into a unit that would be self contained and could easily be travel. The camera(s) that would be in the model should be relatively small.
Keep the set simple surfaces that can accept both paint treatments and projection, and could be easily recreated in different locations
Projectors – will probably need to travel with our own projectors

I'll post more images.
